09.09.2010 DSLR-HDR Video

88221410_640.jpg

It was inevitable, one of those things bound to happen sooner or later.
I'm talking about Soviet Montage Productions' experiments shooting HDR video using two Canon EOS 5D DSLRs.

Personally, I -hate- overdone or cheap-n-easy HDR photography but done the right way can produce amazing results.
Post-processing is half the fun in digital photography and better results are twice the pleasure, I believe.

No offense intended to their respective authors or people who actually like/produce these "extreme" results
but this is how you SHOULDN'T do it, people... two perfectly good photos ruined with bad HDR:

If you agree with me then my advice is to -really- take your time masking the bright/dark boundaries to avoid those nasty glows around the edges, ZOOM IN. Blend more than two images together for a less drastic contrast. Use wide, soft brushes, cover large areas first then zoom in on the details. Pay special attention to the hue/sat in sky areas, colors tend to get over or undersaturated as you mess around with contrast. Of course all of this applies if you don't have dedicated blending software and/or you want to do it by hand in Photoshop, etc.

The Luminous Landscape has a great introduction and examples of HDR Photography that, while being a bit dated are still valid today.

07.09.2010 rheo by Ryoichi Kurokawa

Based on concrete images & HD field recordings, Ryoichi Kurokawa transfigures and distorts original analogue material with digital processes. This – very much alike the human brain – represents memory where visual and auditory perception is reconstructed in an unconscious way. Thus virtual images and reality merge in an uncontrollable way. Ryoichi Kurokawa’s time-based audiovisual design is displayed in a 3dimensional digital mode to see sounds, listen to pictures and read an audiovisual language.

The title of Ryoichi Kurokawa’s new project 'rheo' is inspired from the famous expression of Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus "panta rhei", which means "everything is in a state of flux". Heraclitus alluded to his parable: "You can never cross twice the same river" because both water and person will temporally have changed.
